last night was pretty rough. She was yelping, most likely because she didn’t want to be alone but possibly also from pain &/or discomfort. I moved onto the couch so she quit yelping but was licking all night long. I couldn’t find a cone so only have an inflatable ring for her to wear to prevent licking but it’s worthless. Plus I think it made her too uncomfortable to sleep. We both had an awful night, her licking all night & me saying “uh-uh, no-no, Gracie stop” plus the cat decided to sleep on my stomach…
today she continues to act afraid to go outside. She only peed twice yesterday. Today she finally pooped a bit more than yesterday but very constipated looking. Today she initially didn’t pee for hours – finally did & went a long time. I’m not keeping her confined today but she’s not showing any interest in moving around the house. She’s not sleeping a lot – I thought she would because of last night. She’s just staying on a mat, resting, rolling over to have her tummy rubbed when I enter the room… w/ continued licking.
I’ll probably do the couch routine again tonight since she’s still licking a lot. At some point she’ll be allowed to come back to our room at night but until she’s no longer restless there’s no point in her keeping both of us awake.
we had the restlessness with Dizzy for about a week it does get easier
thanks for the encouragement!
it does get better, but now you know why we call the first two weeks ‘hell weeks’. try to get as much rest as you can – paws crossed for daily improvement.
charon & gayle
Well first, Gracie is such a cutie-pie!
Everyone is going to be miserable for awhile. Gracie for obvious reasons and you, because she’s miserable and you don’t know what to do to make it better. Charon’s right, two weeks of hell.
Our vet finally gave us an Rx for Lidocaine, it’s a gel they use to locally deaden the area. It doesn’t last that long (one or two hours) but if you can get some maybe it will give Gracie some relief.
The couch is a really good idea at this point. Poor sweetie needs mom close by. : )
thanks to all for kind thoughts & shared experiences. Learning from others’ experiences certainly helps to understand what to expect & get thru it.
Hi Gracie and Mom,
Emma had her front leg removed on the 8th of this month and I was also VERY worried after she came home, honestly questioned if I made the “right” decision and everything. Thankfully, I was given this sight and discovered the “two weeks from hell”! It has now been just over the 2 weeks mark and today I had her outside with me and was distracted and lo and behold she was off…….I panicked and called her over and over and she came running, yes running up from the creek on our property, tail wagging, shaking the water off, in all her glory! As so many on this site know it is sooo hard to imagine it gets better at the place you are now, but it truly does and the difference in just a few weeks will make it all worth it! Be patient, keep doing exactly what you are and the payoff will be wonderful!!
jjaye, reading your post made me smile! I can imagine your panic, then I can visualize the wagging tail & shaking the water off! Marvelous visual!!!
